Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

How do I become a commercially licensed drone pilot (First-Time Pilots)?
  • Pass the Aeronautical Knowledge Test at one of the FAA-approved knowledge testing centers located throughout the United States. This is what our Online Remote Pilot Ground School/Part 107 Prep course is designed for you pass.
  • After you have passed the initial aeronautical knowledge test, you will then complete the FAA Airman Certificate and/or Rating Application (known as IACRA) to receive a remote pilot certificate. IACRA is a web-based certification/rating application that ensures you meet the requirements and electronically submits the application to the FAA's Airman Registry. Applications should be validated within 10 days.
  • A confirmation email will be sent when an applicant has completed the TSA security background check. This email will provide instructions for printing a copy of the temporary remote pilot certificate from IACRA. The FAA will then mail you your permanent Remote Pilot Certificate within that 120 days.
Do I need an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate(aka. Part 107) to fly my drone?

If you fly your drone only for hobby/recreational purposes, you do not need the FAA Remote Pilot Certification. However, if you ever plan to use your drone for your business, to receive compensation, or for any services provided by flying your drone. For example, selling aerial pictures or video would require having a Remote Pilot Certificate.

What experience do I need to take the courses?

There is no experience required to take the Online Ground School or the Basic Flight Course.

Do I need to bring my own UAS (drone) to the flight courses?

We provide all of the equipment for the flight courses.

Are you an FAA-certified school?

At this time, there is no licensed training put forth by the FAA. Traditionally you would need to go through a Part 141 training school to be licensed to fly, but that does not pertain to drones. The FAA states that a stand-alone knowledge test is sufficient enough to qualify for a Remote Pilot Certificate.
